Neon Divide

The cyberpunk shooter that finally nails the vibe and the guns

Style and substance, wrapped in the best gunplay of the year.

8.6/ 10

Neon Divide understands something a lot of its rain-slicked peers forget: atmosphere is nothing without friction. Its rendition of the sprawl is claustrophobic on purpose. You spend most of the game at street level, in alleys where the neon barely reaches, and the whole thing feels lived-in rather than art-directed at you.

But the reason to play is the gunplay. Every weapon has weight, recoil you can learn, and a distinct personality. The mid-game 'Ricochet' SMG became my problem-solver for an entire district, and I never once felt the game nudging me toward a 'correct' loadout. Builds emerge from taste, not spreadsheets.

The narrative is smarter than it needs to be, threading a corporate-espionage plot through a cast that mostly avoids cyberpunk cliché. Choices land with real consequence in the back half, and the game is confident enough to let some of them go badly.

It's not flawless. The stealth path exists but feels like an afterthought beside the exhilarating loud option, and the final act reaches for difficulty by inflating enemy health rather than sharpening their behaviour. Neither dents the core loop much.

If you've been waiting for a cyberpunk shooter that treats its guns with as much care as its skyline, Neon Divide is the one. It's the rare genre entry that's as fun to play as it is to screenshot.

What works

  • Weapon feel that ranks among the genre's best
  • A city that rewards vertical exploration
  • A synth soundtrack that scores your worst decisions perfectly

What doesn't

  • The stealth branch is undercooked next to the loud one
  • Late-game difficulty spikes lean on bullet-sponge enemies
